The world’s most feared terrorist group has acquired the radioactive material necessary to build a large “dirty” bomb, Australia’s Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop, says.
The US Pentagon over the weekend confirmed the claims.
Bishop based her statement on intelligence reports that indicate ISIS now has the technical expertise and deadly materials needed to make good its threats to build and deploy weapons of mass destruction.
Australian intelligence experts and NATO commanders are concerned, Bishop said.
“This is really worrying them,” Bishop told The Australian.
The experts work for the Australian Department of Defense and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
“It is likely to have amongst its tens of thousands of recruits the technical expertise necessary to further refine precursor materials and build chemical weapons,” Bishop said of the large number of volunteers that have joined ISIS’ terror army.

ISIS, or the Islamic State as it calls itself, has captured hospitals, research centers and other facilities that contain highly radioactive materials that would normally only be available to governments, Bishop said. Those materials can be used as the active ingredients in a dirty bomb.

Much if not all of the material is from Syrian and Iraqi hospitals and laboratories.
“The insurgents did not just clear out the cash from local banks,” Bishop said of ISIS.
The Pentagon confirmed to World Net Daily that ISIS has the elements to make a dirty bomb.
“We are aware of claims that ISIL has declared its motives of developing a ‘dirty bomb’ in a recent edition of its propaganda magazine,” a Defense Department spokeswoman, U.S. Navy Cmdr. Elissa Smith, told WND.
If that was not bad enough, ISIS could also have the ability to create chemical weapons. Britain’s Daily Mail reported that Bishop believes ISIS wants to use such weapons.
The Guardian reported that the Islamic State has now overrun much of Syria and could soon be in a position to overthrow that nation’s leader, Bashar al-Assad. Assad’s regime is known to have chemical weapons and to have tried to develop nuclear weapons in the past. Rebels in Syria have been capturing large amounts of material from Assad’s army, which is apparently collapsing.
A dirty bomb is simply a large container packed with both explosive and radioactive materials. The idea is that the bomb explosion would spread the radiation, exposing everyone, including emergency responders.
Other variations of a dirty bomb could spread biological and chemical weapons.
